eBay Recommerce: A Look at the Secondhand Economy

The pandemic forced us to think about how we consume goods online – and thankfully in a more responsible manner.  When we think about second-hand goods, we might just think of it as just a bunch of stuff sitting around our home. However, as they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  According to an eBay recommerce study, many people have approximately 36 household items to be resold.  The typical monetary value of the pre-owned items sitting around your home is $5,660.

In addition to more money in your pocket, the secondhand economy is also helpful to the sustainability of our environment.  A total of 720,000 metric tons of carbon emissions have been conserved through the sales of pre-owned electronics and apparel sold on eBay.

The secondhand economy has been a boon for Gen Z.  A total of 81% of Gen Zers (age 18-24) have said that buying pre-owned goods has become more common for them in 2020.

You too can enter the second hand goods economy by selling things that no longer spark joy in your life. Learn more about recommerce and how you can participate in the secondhand ecommerce economy in the visual deep dive and eBay research report below:
