Uses of alloys in industries

Have you ever thought about how much production, manufacturing industries would suffer without the alloy? You may not understand how much it means and the impact alloy has on our day-to-day activities; from the plumbing industries, fashion industry, hardware, mechanical works, and so much more. This article will take you through what alloy is and its importance, and why and where it’s useful.

Alloys

Alloy is a formed substance when two or more elements are melted, one of them being metal. Alloys can include copper, bronze, steel, and aluminum. When the elements are melted, they take a liquid form, but it crystallizes and turns into a solid solution on cooking. There are different types of alloys, but below I’ll guide you through some of them.

Lead-free alloys

Over the recent years, research has proven lead alloy to be toxic and harmful when inhaled by humans, and it contains a huge chemical effect that poses a danger to the environment. Hence the efforts made to ensure the lead is not used as much and is lowered or avoided. Here are some examples of such alloys:

  • Lead-free solders-this is mainly used for portable systems of water and in the plumbing industries. It replaced the 50/50 and 40/60 Tin/ Lead that had dominated the industry and caused much risk to the environment and humans.
  • Lead-free pewters-it’s used in the fashion, jewelry industries since it poses no threat to the environment and has a low lead requirement of 40 parts per million. It consists of Britannia.
  • Lead-free melting alloys-various applications need their own specified temperatures when designing for a low melt alloy. The low melting alloys- has a melting point of 281F and can go to as low as 174F melting point, making it the only solution for engineering that is very dangerous.

Zamak alloy

This comprises three elements: zinc, aluminum, magnesium, and copper to form the Zamak alloy. It has a much higher melting point of about 400°c, making it have a long life span due to the incredible strength. It’s used in the making of toys, furniture, jewelry, and household appliances. It can also be useful to manufacture guns, die casting, hardware, and automobile components.

Alloys have great importance to the industry and many benefits that you cannot ignore. The fact that it increases the strength of appliances and making them durable increases electrical elements resistance and more. I believe you have a clear and greater picture of how much alloy means to our well-being.
